The syllabus for Standard Grades does not mention the word ‘evolution’. Pupils simply have to be aware that selection favours those individuals that leave most surviving offspring.

There is a hint that all living organisms have a common ancestor in the aims of the ‘Investigating cells’ topic:

The aim of this topic is to stress the unity of life by developing a knowledge and understanding of those structures and processes shared by all living organisms

The implication here is that biological features shared by living organisms are evidence that they all evolved from a common ancestor. This argument from homology needs to be critically examined because it is by no means as simple as it sounds here. See the essay on homology on this website.

Quote

Speculations on the chemical origins of life are almost universally covered in school curricula under ‘Evolution’, despite the questionable relevance of the topic for evolution, and its rather uncertain scientific basis.
