The following extracts from this specification is relevant to the teaching of origins:
TiS: While there is general agreement that some of the diversity of living organisms is due to selection and evolution, it is controversial to claim that it can account for all diversity. Interestingly, the detailed evidence for evolution outlined below only supports very limited evolutionary changes.
TiS: Proponents of intelligent design or creationism are unlikely to find anything to disagree with here. None of the facts and theories mentioned here prove that all living things have evolved from a common ancestor, or that all diversity of life is due to evolution. So the earler claim that "selection and evolution can account for the diversity of living organisms" is not demonstrated to pupils by evidence. |
Intelligent design theory could be discussed in schools, but only in the context of being one of a range of views on evolution that students might consider and evaluate against the evidence. Lord Filkin 21.02.2005 |
