The Royal Society agrees with its Director of Education, Prof. Michael Reiss, that it is legitimate to discuss creationism in school science classrooms.
The Times reports today:
"A spokesman for the organisation, which counts 21 Nobel Prize winners among its Fellows, confirmed yesterday that Professor Reiss’s views did represent that of its president, Lord Rees of Ludlow, and the society."
However, the Times incorrectly asserts that this "puts the august science body on a collision course with the Government". In fact, the Government allows teachers to discuss creationism and intelligent design in schools if pupils ask questions.
The Times also claims that Michael Reiss's views put him at odds with Charles Darwin. As far as we know, Charles Darwin never made the exclusive claim that his theory should be the only theory of origins taught in science classrooms.
